Clouds in my Coffee

Clouds in my Coffee
"But…but … but I love you."
She shrugged at him.
"My condolences."
"That’s it?!"
"What do you want me to say? That`s nice, good for you, whatever makes you happy."
"Doesn’t it count for anything?"
"Yeah, cash and prizes, just dial this number."
"It’s not funny."
"I know."
"Do you?"
"Yes," she sighed. "I`m sorry that you love me. It makes it all so much more complicated."
"Seemed simple to me."
"Well, yeah, it would."
"So now what?"
"So now nothing. What do you want me to say?"
"You know."

She sighed again.

"I can’t change the way I feel."
"And I can?"
"I don’t know, but you are trying to make it my problem and it isn’t."
"We could just have sex."
"With each other?"
"Happy for you to arrange someone else, I guess." He kicked a rock by his feet and watched it ricochet off the house into the garden.
"Come on then."
"What?"
She looked him up and down.
"I said, come on. Why not?"

He stared at her as she turned and walked inside. His heart began to pound, did she mean this? And did he? Did he want her if he couldn’t have her, keep her? Was this truly happening?

He could hear her voice drifting out to him. "Honey?"

As if in slow motion, his feet slowly moved towards the doorway, seemingly separate from his own thought processes. He was in the doorway now, the hallway, where had she gone? Was he really doing this?

Doors everywhere, which one? Where was she? Would she call out again? Did he dare say her name?

He watched his hand reach out and touch a doorknob, twist, turn, push. Suddenly the world was pierced by a screeching siren. An alarm? World-War III? What had he done?

It was a moment later that he came to, tangled in his bedclothes covered in sweat, his clock screaming merrily at him. He bashed at it and disengaged himself from the sheet. Not even in his dreams could he make her his own.

"Honey? You awake?" Her voice was muffled by the pillow he was clutching as protection from the morning.
He put it down and moved towards the bathroom without answering.
"I have to go, you won’t forget to pick up the kids from karate practice after work, will you?"
He grunted and turned on the shower, washing the last cobwebs of the dream from his head. He’d won in the end, she’d married him, they were living happily ever after.

He stood there, water dripping down his face as the door slammed behind her.
